Additional Refractive Surgery
After Cataract Surgery

For patients experiencing vision concerns after cataract surgery, our clinic offers "additional corrective procedures" to fine-tune and readjust your postoperative vision.

  • You wanted multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) initially but gave up due to cost or clinical candidate suitability at the time.
  • Distance vision is sharp, but you cannot view computer or smartphone screens without reading glasses.
  • Computer and smartphone screens are clear, but distant objects appear blurry.
  • You underwent insurance-covered mono-focal lens surgery, but the resulting focal distance does not match your daily visual preferences.
  • Residual myopia or astigmatism forces you to wear glasses, which you find inconvenient.

Additional Surgical Options

We propose two additional correction techniques tailored to your ocular conditions and personal expectations:

  1. Add-on Lens Implantation (ICL / IPCL)
  2. LASIK Enhancement Surgery

Add-on Lens Implantation (ICL / IPCL)

An Add-on lens is a secondary, supplementary lens implanted into an eye that has already undergone cataract surgery. It is called "Add-on" because it fine-tunes visual acuity by adding an extra lens.

Utilizing advanced technologies from intraocular contact lenses—ICL and IPCL—backed by our clinical track record of 40,459 procedures, we perform precise calculations based on detailed diagnostic data to deliver highly accurate corrective surgery.

■ Advantages

  • Converts standard mono-focal vision from prior cataract surgery into multifocal vision (providing clear distance and near vision).
  • Reduces residual myopia and astigmatism, allowing clear sight without glasses.
  • Reversible: If the visual output does not suit you, the lens can be removed to restore your original postoperative state.

■ Disadvantages

  • If your cataract surgery was set for near vision, correcting myopia/astigmatism for distance will conversely require reading glasses for near tasks. For patients who desired near vision without reading glasses, IPCL is recommended.
  • Requires a secondary, short intraocular surgical procedure.
  • Like cataract surgery, post-op clinic visits and eye drops are necessary.
  • Halos and glare around streetlights or headlights may be experienced in dark or nighttime environments.
  • It may take 3 to 6 months for vision to stabilize and feel completely natural.
  • As an elective procedure, it is fully self-paid.

LASIK Enhancement

A procedure that applies laser energy to reshape the cornea, correcting residual refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism after cataract surgery.

■ Advantages

  • Delivers extremely high precision in correcting residual myopia and astigmatism.
  • Improves distance vision without glasses (Note: if prior cataract surgery was aligned for near vision, reading glasses will be required for near tasks).
  • Lower cost compared to Add-on lens implantation, although still fully self-paid.

■ Disadvantages

  • Cannot convert a mono-focal lens into a multifocal lens.
  • Irreversible: Cornea tissue is reshaped and cannot be restored to its original state.
  • Follow-up visits and prescription eye drops are required, as with standard LASIK.
  • Temporary dry eye symptoms or foreign body sensations may occur, requiring eye drop therapy for a period of time.
