【Eye-related stories】 About the Optic Nerve

The optic nerve is an essential nerve that transmits light information captured by the eyes to the brain.
It is a part of the central nervous system and is considered an extension of the brain. Damage to the optic nerve can cause decreased vision, visual field loss, and in severe cases, blindness.

Structure of the Optic Nerve:

  • ・Formed by the axons of retinal ganglion cells
  • ・Composed of more than one million nerve fibers
  • ・Extends from the back of the eyeball to the brain
  • ・Passes through the optic chiasm, where the left and right optic nerves cross

Main Functions of the Optic Nerve:
① Transmission of Visual Information

  • ・Light → Retina → Electrical signals → Optic nerve → Brain (visual cortex)
  • ・Accurately transmits information such as shape, color, brightness, and movement

② Binocular Vision and Depth Perception

  • ・Integrates visual information from both eyes through the optic chiasm
  • ・Enables recognition of depth and distance

③ Involvement in Visual Reflexes

  • ・Pupillary light reflex (pupil constricts when exposed to light)
  • ・Controls unconscious responses to visual stimuli

Major Diseases Related to the Optic Nerve:

  • ・Glaucoma
  • ・Optic neuritis
  • ・Ischemic optic neuropathy

Once the optic nerve is damaged, recovery is generally difficult.
Therefore, early detection is extremely important. If you notice any abnormal changes in your vision, please consult an ophthalmologist promptly.
