【Eye-related stories】About Fovea

The fovea is a depression located in the center of macular, which is the most important part to see the things vivid.

Features of fovea are as follow

  • ◼︎ Position・structure
The fovea is located in the center of macular in the posterior part of retina, with a diameter of 1.5~2mm.
  • ◼︎ Function
This is the region that most reflects the visual acuity, and where the visual acuity reaches to the highest level.
Usually, the visual acuity we tested in the eye chart test reflects the function of fovea.
  • ◼︎ Cells
The fovea contains concentrated cone cells, with the extremely high density.
The cone cells play the role of colour discrimination and high-resolution vision processing, fovea has the highest colour discrimination ability and visual acuity.

The fovea plays a vital role in many daily activities such as reading, using smartphones, office work and driving.
Therefore, if the fovea is damaged due to condition such as macular degeneration, the visual acuity may suddenly decrease, and the central vision may appear dark or distorted.
